What Pets.com & Quibi Taught Him

  • Timing isn't destiny, but it shapes options: Pets.com launched when 80% of internet was still dial-up. Chewy proved the business model works, just seven years later
  • Excess capital can be an albatross: When three pet e-commerce companies all raised $50M+, it became an unwinnable arms race on ad spend
  • Take the learnings, not the blame: Pets.com and Quibi led to doors that wouldn't have opened otherwise. The "failures" became catalysts
  • Shut down with honor: Pets.com returned investor capital instead of burning it. First public company to do that
The paradoxTom took pets.com from zero to public to shutdown in 19 months. Yet it re-energized him about the craft. The "failure" taught him more than many wins.
