Building Product Hunt:
Authenticity, Scale & The Cost of Delegation

The Founder Reality

The Mask You Wear as CEO

MASK
"Being a CEO or founder makes it slightly harder in some ways because you still have to put on this mask. You have to put on this face of confidence externally and internally as well, where people need to trust you. You also don't want to subject them to the same anxiety that you're feeling."
  • The flutter in your stomach, the anxiety that wakes you up
  • Everyone faces hardship building a company, but founders can't share it equally
  • The tension between authenticity and necessary leadership confidence
  • What doesn't break you makes you stronger (and scars you a little)
Content Strategy

Micro-Blogging as Product Discovery

  • The Problem: Writing full blog posts takes hours, writer's block hits
  • The Insight: DM-based Q&A removes the blank page problem — founders provide the prompt
  • The Vulnerability: People ask personal, vulnerable questions in DMs they'd never ask in public
  • The Leverage: Answering one DM helps hundreds with similar problems when shared anonymously

The biggest surpriseFounders will share their deepest struggles in private that they never would publicly: "We have three months runway left. We're running out of money."
Product Hunt Regrets

Three Things I'd Do Differently

❌ Horizontal Expansion

What we tried: Expand beyond tech into podcasts, video games, books, fashion—a universal discovery platform

Why it failed: Community doesn't translate. Reddit is rare. Product experience doesn't work across categories.

What I'd do: Go deeper vertically into tech, serve that community better first.

❌ Delayed Monetization

What happened: Raised seed + Series A, grew for years, monetized only after funding

The mistake: Thought revenue prioritization = lost focus on growth

The truth: 10% revenue focus from 2014 = cashflow breakeven by 2015-2016. Massive freedom and proof of model.

❌ Delegation & Control

I edited the newsletter every morning at 5am for years—silly. Strong opinions + perfectionism = bottleneck.

The cost: team trust fractured, growth capped, burnout. The fix: delegate fully, accept 85% quality, ship.

Founder Toolkit

Product Skills
Become Founder Skills

  • Product thinking: How did this founder arrive at this insight? Evaluate thinking, not just ideas
  • Iteration mindset: Cities are products. Evaluate cost vs. benefit. Pivot when ROI shifts
  • Curation over creation: Tap experts, find patterns. Easier + better + more valuable
  • Authenticity filter: Find quiet signals (DMs) vs. public noise (Twitter AMA)
The PM-to-Founder transferProduct management and investing both use the same skill: evaluating thinking and character under uncertainty.

What Actually Matters in Building

You need to share everything as a founderINSTEAD →Authenticity AND strategic confidence can coexist. You protect your team from anxiety while being real about hard times.
Growth and revenue are mutually exclusiveINSTEAD →10% revenue focus from day one doesn't kill growth. It proves your model and gives you freedom.
As a founder, you must do everything perfectlyINSTEAD →Perfect is the enemy of scale. Delegate fully, accept 85%, and let your team prove themselves.
Expand horizontally to capture more usersINSTEAD →Go deep vertically first. Build moat in one community before expanding. Most platforms fail at horizontal scaling.
