"Dumbest Idea I've Heard"
to $100M ARR

Co-founder & CEO, Gamma

The Origin

Gamma Was Dismissed
Then It Won

GAMMA ARR
"That has to be the worst pitch, worst idea I have ever heard. Not only are you trying to go against incumbents, you're going against incumbents that have massive distribution. You are never going to succeed." — a VC to Grant, third pitch in
  • Started Gamma in 2020, pitching over Zoom from a corner of a London flat after the kids went to bed
  • The category insight: slides have been around for almost 40 years as the default medium of choice
  • Went from that pitch to over 100M ARR and over 50M users, on a team of around 30
  • The AI-native rebuild: not adding AI to PowerPoint, reimagining the format from the ground up

ARR in <2 years

users globally
  • The job-to-be-done: visual communication and storytelling, where today's default is PowerPoint or Google Slides
  • Speed is the product: the first 30 seconds of onboarding have to feel magical enough that new users tell their friends
  • Word-of-mouth drives over 50% of new subscriber growth, mostly direct visits and branded search for Gamma
  • Influencer marketing amplifies it: every dollar spent brings about 1.5 additional word-of-mouth users on top
The Growth Story

From Dismissed to $100M ARR

  • 2020: Founded during the pandemic; two ideas in parallel (presentations and a virtual office called The Lobby)
  • Aug 2022: Public beta on Product Hunt won product of the day, week, and month, but signups plateaued and word-of-mouth was missing
  • End of March 2023: Relaunched with AI at the core of onboarding; signups jumped from a few hundred a day to 5,000, then 10,000, then 20,000
  • 2025: Over 100M ARR, worth over $2B, over 50M users globally, on a team of about 30
The first 30 seconds

With only 12 people building, Grant's team put all their energy into one spot: making the first 30 seconds of the product feel magical enough to earn the next 30.

Lean by design

About a quarter of the team is product designers. The internal mantra: "hire painfully slowly." They ran the company profitably from very early on.

Playbook

How Gamma Actually Grew

  • Rebuild onboarding around AI so the first 30 seconds feel magical, then earn the next 30
  • Build for the job-to-be-done (visual communication), not the feature set of the incumbent
  • Word-of-mouth over paid: over 50% of new subscribers come direct or via branded search
  • Layer thousands of micro-influencers on top; every influencer dollar brings ~1.5 more word-of-mouth users
On the pitchThe investor said it was "the worst idea I have ever heard." Grant kept pitching. Gamma is now over 100M ARR and worth over $2B.

What Grant Did Differently

Scale headcount to scale the companyINSTEAD →"Hire painfully slowly." Around 30 people serving over 50M users, profitable throughout.
AI as a feature bolted on laterINSTEAD →Put AI at the core of the first 30 seconds of onboarding, then relaunch.
Chase big-name influencersINSTEAD →Find thousands of micro-influencers whose audience actually uses your product; onboard each one yourself.
